I've just been offered a recurring sideline gig with a programming magazine. It would be a nice change of pace; and it would probably integrate better with and distract less from my day job.

Which one? Is it available in the US?

Ibatex,

It's International PHP Magazine. Distributed electronically, so it's available anywhere - even Madagascar!

(I'm not kidding, they actually have some subscribers there.)

My next two MySQL columns will be about some new 5.1 goodies - the Event Scheduler and some nifty XPath functions.

In other news, Jeremy Keith's new DOM Scripting book, for which I was the technical reviewer, has been rated 10/10 at Slashdot.

Yep, I have been gathering material for an article with which I am going to approach them. Mostly out of the need to diversify but secondly because their 2000 to 3000 minimum is more suited to the way I write. php | architect was murder. I finally ended up with 6000 words but I am still in shcok from having to do it.

So I'll be watching your writing style closely Jon Wink

The book looks promising, since you were a technical reviewer I guess you read it. Any good?

(Six months later...)

Yeah, jax, it's not too bad. I thought that Jeremy came up with some good examples, and I liked the tone he took with regard to the evolution of the technologies involved.

Update:

I did technical review for the new Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax, by Chris Heilmann, and had a bit of fun with the "About The Technical Reviewer" page.

Just published on the MySQL Developer Zone - an article co-written with Peter Gulutzan on MySQL 5.1 Partitioning.

I've had some discussion with Apress about possibly doing a new edition of MySQL Database Design and Optimization, but so far there's nothing definite about that. I'll keep you posted.

I've also upgraded my blog with WordPress (BlogCMS was just starting to suck too much), the latest versions of PHP and MySQL, a real RSS feed, and a silly domain name I've had kicking round for a couple of years. This weekend I'll import my old posts or link/redirect to them somehow or other. If any of you would like to swap links/feeds, just let me know.

If you're interested at all in MySQL Cluster, check out the MySQL 5.1 Cluster Certification Study Guide, which is available here. A year in the making, it was co-written with NDB developer Stewart Smith, Pro MySQL author Mike Kruckenberg, and MySQL training course developer (and former MySQL certification exam developer) Roland Bouman. It also marks my official debut as an editor.

I've also recently had an article on MySQL and XML published on the MySQL DevZone.
