Hi, I would like opnions please on this site. It is just a basic family vacation site. First one finally accomplished in frontpage. Unfortunatly it took way longer then I had planned on. Rolling Eyes However, the important thing is that it is finally finished! Laughing

It's nice and clean, no clutter -- I like that:) And it is immediately clear what the site is about. And I actually kind of fancy the colour combo, even though I probably would have flipped if it'd been suggested to me before I saw it:)

First thing that came to mind, was that I'd have a different colour than blue on the hover-effect on the main menu. Darker orange/orangered or red, maybe.
I feel the background is a little busy -- something more discreet, maybe?
And to nitpick a little; the use of borders around the violet and the orange "header" and "footer" is inconsistent -- I think both should have borders, or none. (How about borders of darker orange(/red) or violet?)

Thanks Tiram, I apprecaite your opnions deeply!

Hmm, never thought about the blue/orange on the hover effect on the menu. I do agree that the blue and orange don't really appear to go together. (of course this is a template, I would love to say that I designed it myself, but that is the next thing that I need to learn Confused ) I'll have to look into changing this to see how to do it.

Now in regards to the footer, Would I go into the html and change this to a different color? Maybe the blue that the horizontal rule is across the top of the page? Open for all suggestions.

Thanks again!!!!

Oh, I like the blue/violet and orange:) I was just thinking that maybe you could use orange for general, blue for "You are here" and darker orange/orange-red for the hover-effect. So that "You are here" and the hover would look different.

As for the footer and borders: yes, I guess doing it in the source would be the easiest way to do it. I noticed the border were done with a mix of CSS and deprecated HTML, I'll go have a closer look now.

Tiram:
I went into the html and I don't see how they did the hover buttons? I know it says include folder, but, unfortunatly, The include folder isn't in the folders? Not even in private.

Long story, but to make it short, most likely I somehow deleted this folder. I had upgraded my computer to xp pro from home, and when the back up was done, big duh here, I never saved the original web that I was working from. So I had to publish from the web to my computer and I think somewhere along the line I lost the includes folder. lol, not that I have fully grasped the includes as of yet anyhow! Laughing

The footer will be easy to change, I see the color # for that in the html. Not a problem at all on that end. Although, If I take this out, would that effect the color on the navagation? just a thought.

Heh, I'm pretty clueless about javaScript, so I'm not even gonna _try_ to help you with that:)

No, it wouldn't:) BTW, I saved your page, edited it a bit, and put it up here:
tiram.org/temp/c1sissy

If you look at the code for the footer and header, you'll see I've cleared away a bit of superfluous code and CSS, _and_ put in the borders I suggested, just to show you how it might look. I've only checked this in Opera, mind.

Hi Tiram

I appreciate what you have done. I'm going to the link that you have provided now so that I can take a look at it.

I don't know anything about css or java script. lol, just know about the html. But am sloooowly working on this stuff. Laughing

Thanks for your time, I'll be back later on today. Kids are off and things need to be done for easter preps! lol. Thanks again, I appreciate the time that you are putting into this. I'm looking forward to the day when I can help others out as I have been helped.

Guhhhhh Frontpage.

Although it's theoretically possible to change how those triangles are handled (making it a darker orange for hovers), because this was done with Frontpage it's just not going to happen. The skill required to do so is more than what's required to hang oneself for using Frontpage ;o)

Tried to be JS guy to the rescue, but that's all I've got for ya :O) Sorry.

I like the site as well, except for 2 things:

1) Long strings in the mouseovers make the triangles overlap the link names. This is probably a Frontpage bug that can't be resolved.

2) The font used for the title doesn't seem to fit that used in the rest of the site; it seems a bit out of place. It also seems like the contrast in its color could be turned up a very tiny bit.

I am working on the html etc.. I like working with both, though I enjoy the hand coding better, I haven't gotten to the desing the page aspect of all of it yet. Crying or Very sad

I'll check this out when I get home. lol, think I can leave the house without checking the email/computer? nope! lol

c1sissy, that is a nice site and much better than a lot of FrontPage sites I've seen :)

I know it's a family site but I still figured I'd point out one picky little thing - on the Bush Gardens page, the bird pictured is a red macaw - obviously hard to spell if you haven't seen it and only hear someone say it. My friend actually did the wild bird shows at Bush Gardens in VA but I don't remember if it was last summer (2002) or the summer before.

What a great site - I keep telling myself someday I'll organize all the family photos and vacation photos online but I never seem to get around to it. Congrats on the site!!

Chlucy:
lol, You know I did have it saying red macawl at first. I don't know why I changed it!

Also, I should have checked the spelling on it. But figured that it was spelled correctly. I'm surprised that spell check didn't pick it up! lol Unless mcaw isn't in the spell check!

How cool to have had a friend that did the shows! I think that would be awsome! Actually it wouldn't seem like a job!

I'd love to have a (and I'm not sure if this is spelled correctly or not) Salmon Island Parrot. They are the most beautiful of the parrot family that I have seen. Their feathers are actually like a satin look. Beautiful. Alas though, I dream big dreams!!!

Anyhow, I will change that one. And thanks for the review/critique of the site!

Oh, btw, my pictures are really not as organized as they should be either. I have a computer filled with ones that need printing, as well as shoe boxes that need placing into albums. One day........ Wink

Chlucy, if work to complete is the trick, my Pics pages are fairly automated - for example Dick's Last Resort is generated from a text file, pics.txt. I'm happy to give out the ASP script that does it.

I'm working on a couple more automations so I can get pics with my nifty Canon Elph posted faster, but it's pretty quick as-is.

Sure Soop, I'd be happy to take a look at the ASP code

my prof keeps calling it "asp" as a word which bugs me

My biggest problem is getting the images from the original files and shrinking them down for print or web, saving them and uploading them. Tonight I actually got all our garden photos up on my site - not a very attractive layout but they're up so I can change the pages later if I want.

I haven't had much success with ASP code - I much prefer PHP but I'm trying to learn it so I can work with Access dbs - I think PHP works with Access but I haven't tried yet.

Thanks for the code, perhaps that will get me motivated Smile

I'll post the ASP code when I get in tonight.

In Photoshop, you can use "Actions" to automate things like this; but it's very macro-oriented (artist-oriented). I'm sorely wishing there was some way of editting the "script" generated to fine-tune things. For example, it's possible to create an Action that:
  1. Scales an image to a specified size (say 800x600).

  2. Saves the image to a subfolder as JPEG at say, 60 quality level.

  3. Scales the image again to a specified size (say 60x60).

  4. Saves the image again to a separate subfolder as GIF at say, 32-colors

  5. Closes the image without saving.

That Action can then be used in File>Automate... to apply it to a whole folder full of images; bam, images ready for Web, with Thumbnails.

Unfortunately I generally end up with images that are of varying sizes (so 800x600 isn't the perfect Web dimension, nor 60x60 perfect thumbnail), so I need something just a little bit finer. Perhaps it's time I researched this online... hmmmm... .
